Durham for the Cathedral

Take a guided tour around the awe-inspiring Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and masterpiece of Norman architecture. Also included is a trip to Open Treasure, an award-winning museum set in the UK’s most intact medieval monastic buildings.

Durham Cathedral is one of the great buildings of Europe. Set grandly on a rocky promontory next to the Castle, with the medieval city huddled below and the river sweeping round, the profile of the UNESCO World Heritage Site is instantly recognisable.

The Cathedral is cherished as one of Europe's great Norman cathedrals. Built as the shrine of Saint Cuthbert over 900 years ago, it remains a site of pilgrimage with a rich cultural history, housing tombs of two great saints. Visitors are drawn to the Cathedral as a filming location for the Harry Potter films and Marvel Avengers: Endgame, and for its magnificent Romanesque architecture which makes it an unmissable stop for any tour in Durham.

Your visit includes a guided tour to fully appreciate the Cathedral’s history, intricate Romanesque architecture, and recently reopened central tower.

For the adventurous, climb 325 steps to enjoy spectacular views over Durham’s medieval streets, wooded peninsula, and sweeping river.

Also included is a trip to Open Treasure, the award-winning museum set in the UK’s most intact medieval monastic buildings. Marvel at the 14th-century oak-beamed Monks’ Dormitory, step into the octagonal Great Kitchen, and see the Treasures of Saint Cuthbert, some of the most significant surviving Anglo-Saxon artefacts in the country. Regularly changing exhibitions ensure there’s always something new to discover.
