The traditional maritime town of Whitby in Yorkshire, with its old cobbled streets, picturesque houses and sandy beach, promises a great destination for a group holiday or short break.

A town of endless charm and surprising contrasts; begin a nautical-themed visit by walking down the cobbled lanes to the handsome harbour, where fishing trawlers sail past lifeboat cruises and rickety pubs jostle for position alongside the lively bars.

The town is divided in two by the harbour and the river Esk estuary. The older part of Whitby - located on the east bank - is a jumble of narrow medieval streets, while the newer town is found on the opposite bank.

Whitby’s rich historic identity reveals itself at every turn. Group travel organisers can arrange a visit to the English Heritage site of ancient Whitby Abbey, stand beneath the haunting whale bone arch, discover the bustling fish market or explore the Captain Cook Museum - a 17th century harbour-side house where explorer James Cook came to serve his apprenticeship in 1746.

The old town boasts a shoppers’ paradise, with an array of unique shops offering local crafts, famous Whitby Jet jewellery, maritime memorabilia and antiques.

Foodie groups can also take advantage of Whitby’s award-winning seafood restaurants and traditional sea-shanty inns preparing locally-cooked produce; while fish and chip connoisseurs can check out Green’s, Trenchers and The Magpie.
